What is First in Families?

First in Families is a unique and exciting family support project of The Arc of Moore County that challenges our thinking about people with developmental disabilities. FiF gives individuals and families the true power in determining how to meet needs for their family member through community resources and partnerships. The philosophy of FiF, like The Arc, is entrenched in the principles of self-determination, empowerment, equality and inclusion.

We accept applications from families and individuals for specific needs and assist them with finding resources in the community. When cash assistance is necessary, First in Families works with the family and the community to leverage FiF dollars, making the value of our support go farther through donations, discounts, partnerships and resourcing.

FiF of the Sandhills is one of 10 projects across North Carolina funded with family support dollars appropriated by the state Legislature. All FiF projects operate under the FiF Guiding Principles, which give families choice and control over their life choices.

Working with the FiF resource coordinator, a person and his or her family may access:

  • leverage or emergency funds to assist in the purchase of assistive devices, home adaptations or other items the individual/family deems necessary to live in the community;
  • services and supports such as respite, child care, therapies;
  • information and links to community resources and supports;
  • assistance with basic living needs and medical expenses;
  • referrals to other resources that offer support to the family.
